DHMO

DHMO is the acronym for a Dental Health Maintenance Organization. A health maintenance organization, otherwise known as an HMO, is a "managed care" model of insurance benefits where a primary care dentist is chosen by the enrollee. The primary care dentist receives a prepaid amount each month from the insurance company and is responsible for providing benefits under the plan to the enrollee.

DHMOs are known for smaller dental networks compared to those of PPO dental plans. Additionally, PPO dental plans allow enrollees to use out-of-network dentists while DHMOs do not in most cases.

DHMO enrollees are strongly incentivized to receive dental care exclusively from in-network providers because out-of-network providers are normally not covered.
